Slow Travel in Obwalden – Sarnen to Sachseln

Sometimes you don’t need to travel far to feel like you’ve been to another world. Our short trip in the canton of Obwalden turned out to be exactly that — calm, deep, and full of life. We started in Sarnen, a cozy lakeside town where time seems to slow down. Autumn air, soft light, reflections of the mountains in the water… Everything around invites you to slow down. Along the promenade — silence, a few boats, seagulls circling above the water, and people simply sitting and looking into the distance. No rush — just the moment.

We continued towards Sachseln, walking along the lake through small villages and quiet paths. The journey itself becomes the destination. Narrow roads, hills covered with perfectly green grass, old wooden barns that look like they’ve stood there for centuries. Somewhere in the distance, bells are ringing — cows calmly grazing, not paying attention to those passing by.

Autumn here feels like a kind of magic. The trees shift from green to golden, then to fiery red. The river we crossed carries clear, cold water between the stones, as if it knows all the secrets of this place. But perhaps the most unexpected and powerful moment was what we discovered in the rock. Hidden in the forest, almost invisible, there is a small grotto chapel — Ave Maria. It’s not just a place — it’s a feeling. A stone arch carved into the rock, candles, flowers, silence… Inside stands a statue of the Virgin Mary, with dozens of red lights glowing in front of it. People leave notes, small plaques, words of gratitude. Places like this cannot simply be “seen” — they invite you to pause, stay quiet, and reflect.

A little further along the path stands a cross in the forest. Simple, yet very expressive. It feels like part of the landscape rather than a separate object. Here, faith is not displayed — it quietly lives alongside nature. And perhaps that is the essence of this journey. It lasted only a few hours, starting and ending again in Sarnen. Yet inside, it feels like a small journey has been made — not only across the map, but within yourself.

🌊 ℹ️ Lake Sarnen is not just a peaceful alpine lake — it is a legacy of the last Ice Age. Thousands of years ago, massive glaciers carved out the valley, leaving behind this long, deep basin filled with crystal-clear water. Even today, the lake reflects that glacial origin: calm on the surface, but shaped by immense natural forces. Standing by its shore, you are not just looking at a landscape — you are looking at something that was formed long before any village, path, or story existed here.
