Zurich – A City of Lakes, Trams and Inner Peace
Zurich is a very special city to me. Formally, it is not a huge metropolis, especially compared to places like London, Berlin or Paris, but in its energy and atmosphere it sometimes reminds me of my hometown, Kharkiv. There is the same feeling of a true big city here: movement everywhere, railway stations, trams, students, office workers, tourists, musicians and people from many different cultures. Everything feels alive and constantly in motion — yet somehow without creating chaos. And I think this is one of Zurich’s greatest qualities: it manages to feel active and calm at exactly the same time.

©Every Mile StoryWhenever I arrive here, I always get the feeling that the city breathes very easily. People do not seem exhausted or emotionally drained. Someone is sitting by the water reading a book, someone is cycling through the streets, someone is lying on the grass near the lake after work. Even though Zurich is one of the financial capitals of Switzerland, life here still feels slower, softer and more human than in many other large cities. For me, the heart of Zurich is the lake. It creates a completely unique atmosphere. On warm days it feels as if half the city comes down to the water. People swim, drink coffee on the promenade, sit on piers, watch boats passing by or simply enjoy the view of the Alps far away on the horizon. In the evening, when the sunlight turns golden and reflects on the water, Zurich starts looking almost unreal in its beauty.

©Every Mile StoryOver time, I have found my own favorite places here. One of them is the walk from the main railway station to the lake through Bahnhofstrasse. It is one of the most famous streets in Switzerland, but to me it is not really about luxury stores or expensive brands. It is about the atmosphere of the city itself. Trams quietly glide past people, tourists take photos of the old buildings, and somewhere between elegant storefronts you can still see ordinary locals simply returning home after work. There is something very balanced and natural about this mix. Transport in Zurich is another thing I truly love. Getting around the city is incredibly easy and comfortable. Trams, trains, buses, boats — everything works together almost perfectly. The city has several railway stations, and even if you live outside the center, you can usually get anywhere quickly and without stress. I especially love this very Swiss feeling when changing from a train to a tram takes only a couple of minutes and everything works exactly on time.

©Every Mile StoryAnother thing I strongly associate with Zurich is its viewpoints and funiculars. The city is surrounded by hills, and as soon as you go a little higher, beautiful panoramas start opening up everywhere: the old town, the Limmat River, the lake and mountains in the distance. Even after many visits, I never get tired of these views. Zurich has a surprising sense of space and fresh air, something that many large cities lose over time. Recently, Zurich has become even more interesting for cyclists as well. In 2025, the city opened the new underground Stadttunnel beneath the main railway station — a modern bicycle tunnel connecting different parts of Zurich and allowing cyclists to safely travel underneath the railway tracks. Originally, this underground space had been planned for cars many years ago, but today it has been transformed into a huge cycling corridor with bicycle parking areas. I find this deeply symbolic. It feels like Zurich consciously chooses people, bicycles and quality of urban life over noise and traffic. And maybe that is why cycling here feels so enjoyable. One of my favorite events is SlowUp Zurich Ride, when parts of the roads are temporarily given back to cyclists and pedestrians. During those days the city becomes even kinder and more relaxed. Families ride bicycles together, people stop for coffee, music plays somewhere in the background, and nobody seems to be in a hurry. To me, moments like these show the real character of Switzerland better than anything else.

©Every Mile StoryZurich also knows how to celebrate life. The Pride Parade here feels incredibly colorful, open and positive. Music fills the streets, people dance, laugh and celebrate freedom together. And then there is Street Parade — probably one of the most famous electronic music events in Europe. Hundreds of thousands of people gather near the lake, enormous trucks become moving stages, electronic music echoes through the city, and Zurich transforms into one giant summer festival. Even if you are not deeply into rave culture, it is impossible not to feel the energy of that day. At the same time, Zurich also knows how to stay quiet and peaceful. One of my favorite places in the city is the Chinese Garden near the lake. It feels like a completely separate little world hidden inside the city. The noise disappears there, replaced by water, trees, small bridges and a very meditative atmosphere. Sometimes sitting there for twenty minutes is enough to completely reset your thoughts.

©Every Mile StoryI also really love Zurich’s river boats and lake cruises. Even a short trip on the water allows you to see the city from a completely different perspective. It becomes especially beautiful in the evening, when the sun starts setting, the water turns orange and golden, and the embankments slowly light up with warm evening lights. For families with children, Zurich Zoo is almost a separate universe of its own. It is green, modern and designed in a way that feels much closer to nature than to a traditional zoo. I like that you can spend nearly an entire day there and still not feel tired of the city around you.

©Every Mile StorySometimes Zurich gives me a very unexpected feeling of home. From time to time Ukrainian films are shown here, and there are cultural evenings connected to Ukraine. In moments like these, when somewhere in the middle of Switzerland you suddenly hear Ukrainian language in a cinema hall or watch a Ukrainian movie on a big screen, something inside becomes very warm. For a few minutes, home suddenly feels closer again. Another reason I love Zurich is its music and concert venues. The sound quality here is often incredible, and concerts are usually organized extremely well. You can spend the whole day walking near the lake, riding through the city, exploring viewpoints — and then end the evening at a world-class concert, whether it is classical music, jazz or electronic performances.

©Every Mile StoryAnd Zurich itself is surrounded by beauty. As soon as you leave the city limits, you immediately find hills, forests, vineyards, lakes and small Swiss towns. Because of this, Zurich feels not just like a city, but like part of a much larger comfortable world where nature, transport, culture, mountains and people all exist very close to each other. Maybe that is exactly why I always want to come back here again and again. Zurich does not try to impress you immediately. Instead, it slowly reveals itself through small details: the sound of trams, fresh air near the lake, trains disappearing toward the mountains, cyclists riding through underground tunnels, people drinking coffee on the promenade, and this strange but wonderful feeling that life here can be big, beautiful and peaceful at the same time.

©Every Mile Story🏊 ℹ️ In Zurich, swimming is not just a summer activity — it’s part of everyday life. During warm months, many locals finish work, put their clothes into a waterproof “Wickelfisch” bag, and float down the Limmat River with the current through the middle of the city. Office buildings, historic bridges, church towers and riverbanks slowly pass by while people drift peacefully through crystal clear water. Few cities in the world feel so connected to water that the river itself becomes part of the evening commute.
