Ulcinj – A Labyrinth of Stone Streets Above the Adriatic

During our stay in Sutomore, we decided to spend a day exploring Ulcinj, the southernmost town in Montenegro. The drive along the Adriatic coast took a little over an hour and offered beautiful views of the sea almost the entire way. It was a classic Mediterranean summer day, with clear skies, bright sunshine, and temperatures that made every shaded spot feel like a small luxury. By the time we arrived, the heat was already intense, but Ulcinj had a pleasant surprise waiting for us. As soon as we stepped inside the walls of the Old Town, the narrow stone alleys, shaded passages, and centuries-old buildings created a naturally cooler atmosphere. The contrast between the hot coastline and the refreshing maze of stone streets made wandering through the town especially enjoyable.

The highlight of our visit was Stari Grad, the Old Town of Ulcinj, one of the oldest fortified settlements on the entire Adriatic coast. Its history stretches back more than two thousand years, and over the centuries it has been shaped by Illyrians, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans. Perched dramatically on a rocky promontory above the sea, the fortress looks less like a museum and more like a living stone city. Walking through its gates feels like stepping into another era. Every staircase, archway, and narrow lane seems to tell a story. The old walls have witnessed countless merchants, sailors, travelers, and even pirates, who once made Ulcinj one of the most important ports on this part of the Adriatic.

What impressed me most was the atmosphere of the place. Unlike many historic towns that have become heavily commercialized, Ulcinj still feels authentic and surprisingly relaxed. Stone houses with red-tiled roofs, climbing flowers, hidden courtyards, and small family-run cafés give the town a unique charm. Some alleys are so narrow that the sunlight barely reaches the ground, creating cool pockets of shade even during the hottest hours of the day. It is easy to understand why people have lived here for centuries. The combination of thick stone walls, sea breezes, and winding streets seems perfectly designed to withstand the Mediterranean summer. Exploring the town felt less like sightseeing and more like discovering a place that still follows its own rhythm.

One of the greatest rewards of exploring the Old Town is the constant appearance of breathtaking viewpoints. From the fortress walls, the Adriatic stretches endlessly toward the horizon, changing from crystal-clear turquoise near the shore to deep blue farther out at sea. Small boats drift across the water, while beaches and rocky coves can be seen below. At times, the scenery feels more like a Greek island than a town in Montenegro. We spent a long time simply walking, taking photographs, and enjoying the views. Around almost every corner there was another beautiful frame waiting to be discovered: a stone arch opening toward the sea, a quiet terrace overlooking the bay, or a narrow lane leading unexpectedly to a panoramic viewpoint.

By the end of the day, Ulcinj had become one of the most memorable places we visited during our journey through Montenegro. It combines history, architecture, stunning coastal scenery, and a laid-back Mediterranean atmosphere in a way that feels completely natural. There are no grand monuments or famous landmarks competing for attention. Instead, Ulcinj captivates visitors through its authenticity, its centuries-old streets, the scent of the sea, and the feeling that time moves a little more slowly here. Our day trip from Sutomore turned out to be one of the highlights of the holiday, and Ulcinj became one of those places that stays in your memory long after the journey has ended.

🌊 ℹ️ Ulcinj is often called the city of pirates. During the 16th and 17th centuries, it was one of the most famous pirate strongholds on the Adriatic Sea. According to local legend, the celebrated Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, was once held captive here. While historians still debate the story, many locals believe that the name of Cervantes’ famous heroine, Dulcinea, may have been inspired by Ulcinj itself.
