Some places impress you with famous landmarks, while others win your heart with their atmosphere. That was exactly how we felt about Deauville and Trouville, two neighboring seaside towns on the coast of the English Channel, where we spent several unforgettable days during our trip through Normandy. Located directly opposite each other and separated only by the small Touques River, each town has its own unique personality. Deauville is elegant, sophisticated, and slightly aristocratic, which is why it is often called the “Paris by the Sea.” Trouville, on the other hand, feels more authentic and relaxed, with its fishing heritage, charming narrow streets, and unhurried pace of life. Together, they create the perfect destination where you can forget about time and simply enjoy the ocean.
The main reason we came here was the enormous sandy beach. But what impressed us even more were the tides. Of course, we had heard about them before, but seeing them with our own eyes was something completely different. Just a short while earlier, the waves had been gently reaching the promenade, and only a few hours later the sea had retreated so far that an almost endless stretch of sand appeared before us. It felt as if the coastline had suddenly doubled in size. We swam in the cool waters of the English Channel, jumped over the waves, walked barefoot across the wet sand during low tide, and simply watched the landscape transform before our eyes. These moments became some of the most memorable of our entire journey.
One of the greatest pleasures was walking between the two towns. They are connected by a bridge over the Touques River, which opens several times a day to allow yachts and small boats to enter the harbor. Crossing it almost feels like stepping into a different world. In Deauville, elegant Belle Époque villas, beautifully maintained gardens, luxury hotels, and the famous wooden promenade, Les Planches, immediately catch your attention. This is also where you’ll find the iconic beach cabins bearing the names of famous Hollywood actors, directors, and producers. Nearby stands one of France’s most beautiful railway stations, a historic Norman-style building with traditional timber framing that seems to transport visitors back to the early twentieth century.
Trouville turned out to be completely different. It lacks the glamorous atmosphere of its neighbor but offers something equally special: warmth and authenticity. Narrow streets, historic houses, small local shops, the fishing harbor, and dozens of cafés create the feeling of a genuine Norman seaside town. One of our favorite things to do was simply wander along the waterfront without any particular plan, watching the waves and the many people enjoying their day by the sea. It is exactly this relaxed and effortless atmosphere that makes Trouville so charming.
For lunch, we stopped at a small restaurant by the waterfront, enjoying a variety of delicious local dishes. Afterwards, we spent a long time sitting by the ocean, listening to the sound of the waves and watching the sun slowly move across the horizon. Deauville and Trouville are not destinations you visit to tick famous landmarks off a list. They are places where the ocean, the fresh sea air, the endless sandy beach, the spectacular tides, and the feeling that life slows down for a few days become the true highlights of your journey. These are exactly the moments that make traveling so special—and the reason we already know we want to come back.

Вони розташовані буквально навпроти одне одного, розділені лише невеликою річкою Тук, але кожне має власний характер. Довіль — елегантний, вишуканий і трохи аристократичний, недарма його називають «Парижем біля моря». Трувіль же здається простішим, затишнішим і більш справжнім, із рибальським минулим, вузькими вуличками та неквапливим ритмом життя. Разом вони створюють ідеальне місце, де хочеться забути про час і просто насолоджуватися океаном.
Головною причиною, через яку ми приїхали саме сюди, був величезний піщаний пляж. Але найбільшим відкриттям стали припливи й відпливи. Ми, звичайно, знали про них, але побачити це на власні очі — зовсім інше відчуття. Ще зовсім недавно хвилі шуміли біля самої набережної, а вже через кілька годин море відступало настільки далеко, що попереду відкривався майже безкрайній піщаний простір. Здавалося, ніби берег збільшувався в кілька разів. Ми плавали в прохолодних водах Ла-Маншу, стрибали через хвилі, гуляли босоніж по вологому піску під час відпливу й довго просто спостерігали, як море змінює пейзаж буквально на очах. Саме ці моменти стали одними з найяскравіших спогадів усієї подорожі.
Цікаво було також прогулятися між двома містами. Їх з’єднує міст через річку Тук, який кілька разів на день відкривається, пропускаючи яхти та невеликі човни до гавані. Перейшовши його, ніби потрапляєш у зовсім інший світ. У Довілі привертають увагу розкішні вілли Belle Époque, доглянуті сади, дорогі готелі та знаменитий дерев’яний променад Les Planches. Саме тут розташовані легендарні пляжні кабінки, на яких написані імена голлівудських акторів, режисерів і продюсерів. Трувіль виявився зовсім іншим. Тут немає відчуття розкоші, зате є особливий затишок. Особливо приємно було просто гуляти без жодного плану біля води, спостерігаючи за хвилями і численними відпочивальниками. Ця невимушеність та легкість і є головною принадою цих місць.
Обідали ми в невеликому ресторані біля набережної, куштуючи різноманітні страви. Потім ще довго сиділи біля океану, слухали шум хвиль і спостерігали, як сонце повільно рухається вздовж горизонту. Довіль і Трувіль — це не про список визначних пам’яток. Це місце, де головними враженнями стають океан, свіже морське повітря, нескінченний пляж, красиві припливи та відпливи й відчуття, що життя хоча б на кілька днів стає трохи повільнішим. Саме заради таких моментів і хочеться подорожувати. Сюди нам дуже хочеться повернутися ще раз…

Manche Orte beeindrucken mit weltberühmten Sehenswürdigkeiten, andere erobern dein Herz durch ihre besondere Atmosphäre. Genau so haben wir Deauville und Trouville erlebt – zwei benachbarte Küstenorte am Ärmelkanal, in denen wir während unserer Reise durch die Normandie einige unvergessliche Tage verbrachten. Die beiden Städte liegen sich direkt gegenüber und werden nur durch den kleinen Fluss Touques voneinander getrennt. Dennoch besitzt jede ihren ganz eigenen Charakter. Deauville wirkt elegant, stilvoll und ein wenig aristokratisch – nicht umsonst wird es oft als das „Paris am Meer“ bezeichnet. Trouville dagegen fühlt sich ursprünglicher und entspannter an, mit seiner langen Fischertradition, den charmanten Gassen und dem ruhigen Lebensrhythmus. Zusammen bilden sie das perfekte Reiseziel, um die Zeit zu vergessen und einfach das Meer zu genießen.
Der Hauptgrund für unseren Besuch war der riesige Sandstrand. Noch mehr beeindruckt haben uns jedoch die Gezeiten. Natürlich hatten wir schon davon gehört, aber sie mit eigenen Augen zu erleben, war etwas völlig anderes. Eben noch reichten die Wellen bis fast an die Promenade, und nur wenige Stunden später hatte sich das Meer so weit zurückgezogen, dass sich vor uns eine nahezu endlose Sandfläche ausbreitete. Es wirkte, als hätte sich die Küste plötzlich um ein Vielfaches vergrößert. Wir badeten im kühlen Wasser des Ärmelkanals, sprangen über die Wellen, liefen barfuß über den feuchten Sand bei Ebbe und beobachteten fasziniert, wie sich die Landschaft direkt vor unseren Augen verwandelte. Diese Momente gehören zu den schönsten Erinnerungen unserer gesamten Reise.
Ein besonderes Vergnügen war es, zwischen den beiden Städten hin- und herzuspazieren. Sie sind durch eine Brücke über den Fluss Touques verbunden, die mehrmals täglich geöffnet wird, damit Yachten und kleine Boote in den Hafen einfahren können. Schon beim Überqueren der Brücke hat man das Gefühl, in eine andere Welt einzutauchen. In Deauville fallen sofort die eleganten Belle-Époque-Villen, die gepflegten Gärten, die luxuriösen Hotels und die berühmte Holzpromenade Les Planches ins Auge. Dort befinden sich auch die legendären Strandkabinen mit den Namen berühmter Hollywood-Schauspieler, Regisseure und Produzenten. Ganz in der Nähe steht außerdem einer der schönsten Bahnhöfe Frankreichs – ein historisches Gebäude im traditionellen normannischen Fachwerkstil, das seine Besucher in die Zeit des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts zurückversetzt.
Trouville erwies sich als völlig anders. Hier gibt es weniger Glamour, dafür umso mehr Charme und Authentizität. Schmale Gassen, historische Häuser, kleine Geschäfte, der Fischerhafen und zahlreiche Cafés verleihen dem Ort das Flair einer echten normannischen Küstenstadt. Besonders schön war es, einfach ohne Plan an der Uferpromenade entlangzuschlendern, den Wellen zuzusehen und das bunte Treiben der Urlauber zu beobachten. Genau diese entspannte und unkomplizierte Atmosphäre macht den besonderen Reiz von Trouville aus.
Zum Mittagessen kehrten wir in ein kleines Restaurant direkt an der Uferpromenade ein und genossen verschiedene regionale Spezialitäten. Anschließend verbrachten wir noch lange Zeit am Meer, lauschten dem Rauschen der Wellen und beobachteten, wie die Sonne langsam über den Horizont wanderte. Deauville und Trouville sind keine Reiseziele, die man wegen einer langen Liste berühmter Sehenswürdigkeiten besucht. Vielmehr sind es Orte, an denen das Meer, die frische Meeresluft, der endlose Sandstrand, die beeindruckenden Gezeiten und das Gefühl, dass das Leben für ein paar Tage langsamer wird, zu den schönsten Reiseerlebnissen gehören. Genau solche Momente machen das Reisen so besonders – und genau deshalb möchten wir eines Tages wieder hierher zurückkehren.
